The Traditional Medicine Hospital Unit has a mandate to
provide quality medical care including different therapies such as serkhap, cupping, moxibution,
blood letting, herbal bath, herbal streaming, herbal massage etc. The
traditional medical services are available in all the 20 districts of the
country. The traditional medical practitioners work very closely with modern
medical practitioners and often there is cross referral of patients. Except
at the national level in Thimphu,
the Traditional Medicine Unit is housed in the district hospitals and basic
health units grade one in line with the Government policy of integration.
The Traditional Medicine Units treat ailments ranging from
common cold to chronic diseases such as arthritis to emerging diseases such
as hypertension. The concept of holistic approach to healing and treatment of
the mind, body and soul is well received and has gained popularity both
nationally and globally.
Specific objectives
of the TMU are to:
1. Improve
the quality of traditional medical services
2. Strengthen
the integration of TM with modern health services
3. Consolidate
