Alternative Medicine – Hospital

The Traditional Medicine Hospital Unit has a mandate to provide quality medical care including different therapies such as serkhap, cupping, moxibution, blood letting, herbal bath, herbal streaming, herbal massage etc. The traditional medical services are available in all the 20 districts of the country. The traditional medical practitioners work very closely with modern medical practitioners and often there is cross referral of patients. Except at the national level in Thimphu, the Traditional Medicine Unit is housed in the district hospitals and basic health units grade one in line with the Government policy of integration.

The Traditional Medicine Units treat ailments ranging from common cold to chronic diseases such as arthritis to emerging diseases such as hypertension. The concept of holistic approach to healing and treatment of the mind, body and soul is well received and has gained popularity both nationally and globally.

 

Specific objectives of the TMU are to:

 

1.      Improve the quality of traditional medical services

2.      Strengthen the integration of TM with modern health services

3.      Consolidate existing range of services

4.      Introduce new range of services as required
