Alternative Medicine – Institute

The National Institute of Traditional Medicine (NITM) is responsible to develop human resources required for the provision of traditional medical services in the country. The duration of training for Drungtsho is 5 years after class 12 and they receive Bachelors Degree in Traditional Medicine on successful completion of the training program. The Menpa's course is 3 years after class 10 and they receive a Diploma after the training. Besides these 2 main categories, the Institute is also responsible to coordinate the training of Pharmacy Technicians and Research Assistants conducted by the Pharmaceutical and Research Unit as on the job training. The entry qualification requirement for these 2 categories is class 10 passed.

Since its inception in 1978, the NITM has produced 36 Drungtshos, 34 Menpas, 11 Research Assistants and 12 Pharmacy Technicians.

Specific objectives for the NITM are to:

1.      Continue the training of Drungtshos and Menpas as required by the traditional medical system in the country

2.      Review and revise the training curricula based on the actual service needs

3.      Strengthen training facilities and materials

4.      Introduce post graduate and other specialised courses in traditional medicine

5.      Introduce in-service training programs
